Seneca wrote those words two millennia ago, observing the habits of those who boasted of reading a vast multitude of books. He warned that flitting from one brief text to another—never lingering long enough to digest the material truly—leaves the mind restless, distracted, and ultimately unanchored. Today, his critique of scattered reading reads less like an ancient philosophical observation and more like a precise diagnosis of our modern digital condition.

We are living through a profound paradox. We possess instant, frictionless access to more data, news, and opinions than any prior generation in human history, yet we remain uniquely starved for actual wisdom. The contemporary feast of distractions—the endless scroll of social feeds, the barrage of breaking news alerts, the fractured attention of a dozen open browser tabs—promises to keep us actively engaged and informed. In reality, it leaves us intellectually bloated and cognitively fatigued.

Just as a physical diet composed entirely of empty calories will inevitably ruin the body, a mental diet composed of fragmented, algorithmic, and ephemeral digital content will systematically erode the mind. The Stoics understood a fundamental truth: the soul is dyed by the color of its thoughts. When we passively consume whatever the feed serves up next, we voluntarily surrender our inner tranquility to the chaos of external events.

The solution is not necessarily to sever all digital ties or retreat from the modern world entirely. Rather, it requires adopting a ruthless, unapologetic standard for what we allow into our mental space. If we are to maintain clarity and focus, we must bring the same meticulous care to the information we consume as an athlete brings to their physical nutrition. We must shift from being passive victims of the endless scroll to active practitioners of a Stoic information diet.
